MaaS4IRL

Funded by SEAI

MaaS4IRL aims to create a seamless, user-friendly, and sustainable transport ecosystem by integrating various mobility services into a single platform, tailored to Ireland’s unique transport needs and challenges.

Context

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is an emerging technology that might significantly impact Ireland’s decarbonization and digitalization of the transport sector. It combines numerous modes of transportation into a single, comprehensive, and on-demand mobility service, allowing the end-users to access their preferred mode of transportation via a unified application and payment channel.

Integrating MaaS will significantly assist in achieving the goals of Sustainable Mobility Policies (SMP), a strategic framework for 2030 that aims to reduce carbon emissions by 51% by the end of this decade. The SMP’s Goal 10 (known as smart mobility) pledges to promote smart and integrated transportation through new technology and the establishment of relevant regulations. Action 82 of the SMP Action Plan commits to defining a governance structure for introducing and operating MaaS at the national level, encompassing all forms of transportation. These goals provide a ripe environment for design MaaS solutions in Ireland.

However, the successful implementation of MaaS is challenging for various reasons, such as the lack of efficient technologies for seamless integration and an effective trust model within the MaaS ecosystem.

Aim

This project aims to review the existing MaaS ecosystem implemented worldwide and develop recommendations on an optimal Maas for Ireland (MaaS4IRL).

The outcome of this project is expected to bring a positive impact on the transport sector in Ireland. MaaS would have a significant impact on both public and private transportation. It would reduce congestion and emissions. Furthermore, the MDS is expected to serve as a single data access point and generate a vast data marketplace for the providers in Ireland, given that an effective governance system drives the MDS.
